Hawulatu Inusah is the founder and director of Northern Friends for Development. Hawulatu was raised and educated to university level in Accra, Southern Ghana. Despite this fortunate upbringing, Hawulatu was surrounded by Kayayoo Girls in the city centre.
Kayayoo, meaning head portage, is the word used to describe the mass migration of young women from Northern, rural Ghana to Southern, urban Ghana. 2000 girls migrate each year, reluctantly leaving their villages, classrooms and families in the North behind, hoping to make more money in these more developed cities. They live by head portage, often carrying 20kg of goods on their heads.
